iPad Air with OLED display release slated ahead of OLED iPad Pro launch

Apple is gearing up to launch its new iPad Pro model with an OLED display later this month, according to recent reports. However, the company is already working to bring the display technology to its comparatively cheaper iPad Air lineup. A new report claims that the iPad Air will be Apple's next product to get an OLED display upgrade after the launch of the iPad Pro. The company is expected to upgrade the iPad Air later this month or in April, but it is unlikely that it will house the new OLED displays alongside the 'Pro' models.

iPad Air to feature an OLED panel with a single-stack tandem in 2028, according to latest report

According to speculations drawn by the research firm Omdia, Apple's iPad Air will be next in line to receive the new display technology (via The Elec). Omdia researcher Kang Min-soo claims that the iPad Air will feature an OLED display in 2028, with the upgrade to be a single-stack tandem compared to a double-stack tandem on the OLED display for the iPad Pro.

If you are not familiar with the terminology, a double or two-stack tandem features dual light-emitting layers conjoined together. While a single-stack tandem can reach equally high brightness levels as the two-stack tandem, the difference rests in power consumption. The two-stack tandem consumes less power, which potentially impacts the overall battery life of the device. Additionally, the two-stack tandem also contributes to the durability or lifecycle of the panel. For comparison, the iPhone's OLED panel features a single-stack tandem, but there is no information on whether the company is planning to make a switch for its handsets.

This is not the first time we have heard details on the iPad Air getting an OLED panel; however, the research firm previously coined a 2026 release for the device. It also stated that the iPad mini will get upgraded display technology as well. The company was expected to launch the new devices between 2026 and 2027. However, It remains to be seen if Apple will move ahead with its plans, as it also aims to introduce foldable devices in the same time frame.

For now, we are expecting Apple to announce the new OLED iPad Pro by the end of March or in April, according to Mark Gurman. The devices have seen various delays in the past, so we would advise you to take the news with a pinch of salt. Apple is also working on an upgraded MagSafe Keyboard for the revamped iPad Pro models, as both models of the iPad Pro are slated to feature a slightly bigger screen size with a redesigned chassis. Do you think Apple will announce the new iPad Pro models by the end of this month?
