Intel Arc GPUs Receive New Driver Optimizations on Linux, Up To 15% Gaming Performance Uplift 1

Intel Arc GPUs have received a new set of driver updates on Linux which further improve the gaming performance across various titles.

Intel Arc GPUs on Linux Just Got a Whole Lot Better, Driver Optimizations Leads to Huge Uplifts

Intel has released 15 patches for its open-source "ANV" Vulkan Linux driver, which are now merged into the Linux kernel. GPU manufacturers like AMD and Intel are pushing the throttle when optimizing their GPUs to provide the best performance on Linux, and today's development is no exception. It was previously reported that Intel has been working on driver optimizations for a long time, and now the company's work is stacking up to what will create a "refined" platform for Linux gamers to switch to.

The benchmarks shared by Phoronix reveal that Arc GPUs will get much better on Linux. Titles such as F1 22, Strange Brigade, and Dota 2 have witnessed an increased performance, reaching up to 15%. Intel has improved its Linux resources, guaranteeing consumers that developments in other OS won't overshadow them. The Arc platform is becoming a wise option across all platforms, including Linux. With several driver optimizations expected in the future, Intel could be competing with the likes of NVIDIA and AMD.

Moreover, as Phoronix highlights, the expected release of Intel Xe drivers will aid in bolstering the performance of Arc GPUs on Linux since they are supposed to replace the current i915 kernel driver. Details regarding Intel Xe drivers are slim; however, we are aware that they would be much superior to the existing offerings on Linux, so it is stated that Arc GPUs could be the way to lead in the future.

Given that the launch of the Arc lineup is far after offerings from NVIDIA/AMD, it is impressive to see the company being highly competitive on Linux. Intel has adopted an aggressive approach across all OS, clarifying that it will come for the market share retained by NVIDIA and AMD for decades. It will be interesting to see how the Arc platform pans out in the future, especially for Linux users since things will indeed take a new shift with the release of Xe drivers.
