Instagram users complain about Instagram Reels content

Meta recently pivoted in a different direction, and instead of continuing with its fact-checking system, it opted for a community notes model that has raised questions regarding the moderation of the platform's content. Amidst the ongoing changes, Instagram users had to experience unpleasant scrolling when their Reels feed was bombarded with inappropriate content. While the issue has been resolved on the company's end, some users still have an ill experience, raising concerns about where the issue stems from.

Meta apologizes for the influx of explicit content on Instagram Reels and attributes the issue to a mere error

A glitch on Instagram led to many users of the social media platform being flooded with graphic videos worldwide. While it is still not clear how many people have been affected by the issue, many users have taken to other social media platforms to share about their personal Reels feed being bombarded with violent content. The issue continues despite users using the sensitive content control feature to filter out such material.

A Meta spokesperson addressed the ongoing situation and informed the community that an error led to content that should not have been displayed being recommended to users. The spokesperson also informed the users that the problem at hand is being handled, as per a Business Insider report. The spokesperson further apologized for the unpleasant experience its users had. The company clarified that the issue is not related to the change in the content moderation policy but rather an error.

CNBC reported that it experienced the issue first-hand and shared how the content still seemed to pop up despite enabling the highest moderation setting. As per the report:

On Wednesday night in the U.S., CNBC was able to view several posts on Instagram reels that appeared to show dead bodies, graphic injuries and violent assaults. The posts were labeled “Sensitive Content." A number of Instagram users took to various social media platforms to voice concerns about a recent influx of violent and “not safe for work” content recommendations.

While graphic content is generally restricted under Meta's policy, the company can lift the restrictions to protect users and even help raise awareness on certain topics, such as human rights. However, the company did not give details on the exact cause of the issue, and it is facing criticism from users and the tech community for its shift away from fact-checking in the United States. Despite the clarification, many believe the experience stems from the change. What do you think is the possible cause of this unsolicited influx of improper content?
