The power button is perhaps the most used yet the least appreciated hardware on your PC. Despite the continuous efforts of tech giants to bypass this feature, the power button is here to stay and probably for the long run. With the Windows ecosystem, you can always reprogram the power button to enable different modes and settings under the defined circumstances. Here’s how you can accomplish this task.

Using Windows 10 Control Panel:

  1. Open the Start menu and type control panel in the search bar. Click on the Control Panel app to proceed.
    reprogram the power button
  2. In the Control Panel, select System and Security from the list.
  3. Select Change what the power buttons do from the System and Security tab.
reprogram the power button windows 10
  4. The power button would be programmed to shut down by default but you can select the options from the drop-down menu to customize the commands. You would have a total of five modes to choose from i.e. Do Nothing, Sleep, Hibernate, Shut down, Turn off the display.
  5. Once you have selected the desired mode, simply click on Save changes to finish reprogramming your power button.

Using Command Prompt:

Although the Control Panel is a streamlined way of making changes to your PC, the Command Prompt is another way to execute this task. Let us guide you how:

  1. Open up the Start menu and type cmd in the search bar. Right-click on the Command Prompt app and Run as Administrator.
  2. In the Command Prompt, there are two strings of command that you need to be aware of:
    1. When Plugged In, use the command below:

      powercfg -setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT 4f971e89-eebd-4455-a8de-9e59040e7347 7648efa3-dd9c-4e3e-b566-50f929386280 Digit

    2. When on Battery, use the command below:

      powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT 4f971e89-eebd-4455-a8de-9e59040e7347 7648efa3-dd9c-4e3e-b566-50f929386280 Digit

  3. Keep in mind that “Digit” at the end of both commands needs to be replaced by a specific code as shown in the table attached at the end of this guide.
  4. Simply press Enter once you have put in the command.
  5. To save the changes that you have made, enter another command powercfg -SetActive SCHEME_CURRENT
reprogram the power button windows 10
  6. Press Enter to finalize the changes that you have made and close the Command Prompt.

Now you have successfully reprogrammed your power button to the mode of your choice and you can keep on shuffling the modes every now and then to resonate with your requirements. This customizable functionality of Windows 10 not only saves your time but also minimizes the effort of manually selecting a power-down option.
