Download and Install tvOS 16 Beta Over the Air on Apple TV
You can download and install tvOS 16 beta on your Apple TV HD, Apple TV 4K first and second generation, here’s how.
You Can Download tvOS 16 Beta Over the Air on Apple TV if You are Willing to Deal with Xcode
Unlike iOS and iPadOS beta, tvOS betas are slightly different in how they ‘behave.’ While you can easily launch Safari and have beta updates pushed to your iPhone and iPad, you can’t do that on your Apple TV. Instead, you need to download and install Xcode, that too the beta version if you want to test out tvOS 16 beta, and use the developer software to push the update onto your Apple TV HD or 4K (both generations).
We are not going to go into too much detail here since the developer beta of tvOS 16 beta is only available at this point which strictly requires Xcode in order to be installed over the air. But, we will highlight how the installation process works at a glance.
First and foremost, you must sign up to Apple’s Developer Program by going here. Once you’ve signed up, make sure you head over to the Develop section, then Downloads and install the latest Xcode beta from there. Once installed, all you have to do is go back to the Develop section, download the tvOS 16 beta configuration profile onto your Mac and install it onto your Apple TV using Xcode. Make sure both devices, your Apple TV and Mac, are on the same network before proceeding ahead.
Again, this is not the ideal method and one which we will ask everyone to avoid. Instead, we will recommend that you wait for the public beta to arrive instead which makes things far more manageable compared to the developer route. The only downside is this - you will get new beta updates a couple of days later than the developer ones, which is absolutely OK.
Clean installation route is also available as long as you are a member of the Apple Developer Program, otherwise you won’t get access to the tvOS 16 beta IPSW file. Remember one thing, the clean installation method is only applicable to the Apple TV HD since this device ships with a built-in USB-C port. None of the 4K models include a USB-C port therefore you have to rely on over the air updates for delivery of new software.
