During Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2026, Game Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida answered questions about the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2 version in a roundtable interview. As reported by IGN, Yoshida-san revealed the technical specs: the game will target 30 frames per second.
I've already noticed some comments on the social channels talking about the specs and how does it compare to the other more robust systems… I want to be honest to you, we are really working hard on the optimization for the platform and we are striving to get the best performance.
In towns, you may see a lower frame rate only because there are so many players rendered on screen. But we are still able to reach 30 frames per second, and stay in a stable state. I think performance is something you don't have to be concerned about.
This is a bit of a disappointment, considering that the Xbox Series S version of Final Fantasy XIV, which launched a couple of years ago when the game finally landed on Microsoft's consoles, targets 60 frames per second in its 1080p Full HD mode.
One feature the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game will have over the others is support for the Joy-Con's mouselike mode. Yoshida said:
For the first part of the question about the built-in mouse controls, yes, it is supported, and it is possible. And for the second part, I have not tried going into a Savage raid with the built-in mouse yet.
This is in addition to the actual mouse and keyboard support, which is available across all consoles.
Final Fantasy XIV will launch in August for the Nintendo Switch 2. This version will also have its own subscription model, separate from the main subscription model that works across all the other platforms (PC, PlayStation, and Xbox). To soften the blow, Square Enix negotiated two player-friendly terms:
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership is NOT required to play FFXIV on Switch 2, unlike most online multiplayer games on the platform
- Players with an active FFXIV subscription on another platform get 50% off the Switch 2 subscription
Even so, it's extremely likely this version will only attract brand new players rather than existing ones.
