A case study should be presented on the Chinese firm BOE, concerning the near-endless opportunities it has in establishing strong business relationships with the likes of Apple and Samsung, yet still fumbling them by failing to produce quality displays. According to the latest report, the base Galaxy S27 model will no longer feature BOE’s OLEDs, suggesting that the deal with Samsung likely fell through.
Despite pouring significant effort into the Galaxy S27, BOE couldn’t cut a deal with Samsung due to unconfirmed reasons
Looking for a way to offset rising storage and memory costs, Samsung reportedly chose to explore a partnership with BOE to supply OLEDs for the base Galaxy S27. With the deal enabling the Korean giant to procure each for $5 less compared to the price it has to pay to its own display division, Samsung was on track to save a few million in component costs, which could have gone towards a decent DRAM and NAND supply for its next flagship smartphone launch.
Unfortunately, as ETNews reports, the deal between BOE and Samsung has fallen through, making it the second potential deal that the Chinese manufacturer couldn’t ink, with the first being Apple. Due to poor quality control, BOE will have no part in supplying OLEDs for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, or iPhone Fold, with all orders being handled by Samsung and LG.
However, as much as the report tries to cement BOE’s efforts in securing Galaxy S27 OLED orders, it’s likely that Samsung wasn’t pleased with the company’s quality, forcing it to pull out. The exact reasons aren’t highlighted by the Korean media, but we’d assume the aforementioned reason was the case. It’s a disappointing turn of events, seeing as how Samsung could have been a gateway for BOE to establish a solid reputation globally.
Despite this setback, we doubt the Chinese firm will throw in the towel. After all, for those who forgot, BOE is actually competing with Samsung on laptop OLED orders, though the latter has secured shipments for Apple’s touchscreen MacBooks, making it a more lucrative outcome for the Korean manufacturer.
