In case you thought Qualcomm didn’t have any more surprises under its hat of tricks, @SPYGO19726 shares some new details surrounding the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 that’ll power the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s innards. Despite sticking with the same CPU and GPU clock speeds, which are 4.74GHz on the performance cores and 1.30GHz on the Adreno 840, the rumor claims that the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) will be “fine tuned” for better on-device AI and multitasking capabilities.
It’s highly unlikely that the updated version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will be based on TSMC’s newest and most advanced 2nm manufacturing process, but the rumor states that, thanks to the maturity of the existing node, Qualcomm’s flagship SoC will be more efficient than before. Considering that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 are only a few months away, customers won’t have any compelling reason to pick up a Galaxy Z Fold 8 if it ships with outdated hardware.
On top of that, these devices will now arrive with a steeper price tag because of the DRAM shortage, so Samsung needs to prove that they are worth the higher premium. In addition to the improved utility, we hope to see some notable benchmarks where the Korean giant’s foldable flagships deliver better AI performance.
