When it comes to repairing Apple products, it can be hard to choose a do-it-yourself option or even opt for third-party repairs. With Apple support, you cannot be sure if the issue will be fixed or whether the company will decline to replace or repair the device. The tech giant has stringent repair policies that require proper investigation before fixing the phone. A recent update suggests that Apple is changing its repair and warranty policy for the Apple Watch and iPhone and will no longer cater to "single hairline cracks."
Apple is updating its repair policy to not include hairline cracks under the standard warranty for Apple Watch and iPhone
In the previous policy, if your device had a small crack on the display, Apple would take it in for repair as long as it did not have any other apparent damages. Since the crack was minor, it was covered under the warranty, provided the body of the product remained intact.
This change came about after various sources reported the updated policy that the company sent to Apple stores and Apple Service this week. The new clause means that the repair service providers will not take care of any case of a single hairline crack on the Apple Watch and iPhone and will write off the claim as accidental damage.
Wearable and phone users would now be required to pay for the repair themselves in case of screen damage, which would now be classified under accidental damage. Unless you have AppleCare+, if you cracked your display, the fee would be paid from your own pocket, even if there is no outer damage. For now, the policy change applies only to Apple Watch and iPhone but could extend to other devices in the future. Currently, Apple is still processing hairline crack issues for iPad and Mac as part of the standard warranty.
The reason Apple is opting for a more rigorous approach to repair warranty coverage is not yet stated, but the policy was not initially adapted by the stores and instead varied according to the provider. With the recent update, repair services and stores would not have the liberty to deal with the cracks with flexibility.
The company might be implementing this change to encourage users to handle the products with more care and reduce the costs it has to incur due to user negligence. Apple has yet to confirm the actual reason for the repair warranty update and why it is limiting the policy update to iPhones and Apple Watch for now.
