Apple's iPad shipments increased 18.2 percent in the Q2 2024 quarter

iPad shipments have witnessed a gradual decline over several quarters, indicating that Apple’s tablet segment cannot be relied upon too much. However, during the technology giant’s Q3 2024 earnings, we gazed upon the biggest surprise: the company’s shipments marked a 24 percent higher revenue compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Now, a market intelligence firm has revealed a few statistics for Apple’s iPad range, revealing that shipments grew 18.2 percent year-over-year thanks to the new M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro launches. Unfortunately, the company continues to struggle in China, where local players dominate the market.

M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro launches cannot stand toe to toe against Huawei and Xiaomi in China; Apple’s competitors recorded up to a 94.7 percent year-over-year growth

Global tablet shipments reached 34.4 million units for Q2 2024, with IDC reporting that Apple recorded 12.2 million units, grabbing a market share of 35.8 percent and an 18.2% year-over-year growth in the quarter. The Cupertino firm has dominated this category for multiple years now, and thanks to the M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro releases, the company has cemented its position even further.

“Apple shipped 12.3 million units and grew by 18.2% year over year in the quarter. With the launch of the 11" and 13" iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the company was finally able to record growth in the market. iPad volumes grew across the globe except for China, where competition from local players like Huawei and Xiaomi negatively impacted the company.”

Sadly, Apple has struggled to gain any sufficient momentum in China despite the new slates offering incredibly powerful specifications that beat the competition by a landslide. The region is occupied by Huawei and Xiaomi, who continue to dominate, backing Apple into a corner. Xiaomi might have shipped just 2 million units this quarter, but the statistics reveal that it garnered a whopping 94.7 percent year-over-year growth compared to the Q2 2024 quarter.

As for Huawei, it shipped an estimated 2.3 million units, accumulating a 6.8 percent market share, and recorded an impressive 40.3 percent year-over-year growth. The former Chinese giant recently introduced the new MatePad 11.5S, which has displayed a positive reception amongst consumers, with the June online promotions in China further adding fuel to Huawei’s fire, allowing it to post higher shipment figures.

Despite the M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro being proven to be superior devices, it appears that the Chinese sentiment runs deep with customers, as they are willing to forego a multitude of benefits in return for a product mass produced by a local manufacturer.
