Apple has switched its approach to the iPad ever since it positioned the iPad Pro as a computer. The iPad underwent various facelifts over the years, including the internals and the exterior design. The device has always been handheld, which means that other than consuming media or typing on it, it has been used in portrait orientation, but the trends are changing. The company is now looking to reposition the Apple logo in landscape orientation on the iPad.
Apple could repeat history and switch the Apple logo on the iPad from portrait to landscape
Apple is not shy when it comes to playing around with the position or orientation of the Apple logo on its products. The company once switched the logo upside down on the MacBook, which faced downwards when the lid was opened. Following more or less the same pattern, the company now wants to switch the Apple logo's position in landscape orientation, and there are various solid reasons why it makes sense.
With the launch of the M2 iPad Air and the M4 iPad Pro models, Apple switched the typical position of the Face ID and front-facing camera sensors. All of the Face ID components and the camera are now situated on the right side of the device, as Apple wants users to use the device in landscape mode. In fact, landscape mode is possibly the natural position of the device for users as well, which potentially became the reason for Apple's decision.
Given that the device also has to be in landscape mode when connected to accessories like the Magic Keyboard, Apple has gradually shifted its entire decision to consider it as a computer replacement. In a new interview with the French website Numerama, senior Apple employees share details on the newly launched iPad Pro and iPad Air models. It was highlighted that the device is mostly used in landscape mode, and it only makes sensors for the Face ID and other sensors to rest at the top.
Apple's product designer, Molly Anderson, says that the Apple logo on the iPad could change in the future. Anderson states, "We are thinking about it. The iPad has long been a product that is used in portrait mode, but we are using it more and more in landscape mode." Apple has already started making the necessary changes, as the bootup Apple logo on the screen already appears in landscape mode. This is another reason indicating that the company wants users to use the device in this orientation.
It raises the question of whether the company would consider the approach on all iPad models or just the iPad Air and Pro models. The iPad mini, for instance, has a smaller footprint than the rest of the lineup, and people usually use the device in portrait orientation. It is just an idea at this stage, as the senior Apple executives have not shared any possible release time frames.
