The form factor for Apple's upcoming iPhones is in flux right now, with a plethora of tidbits now in the open in relation to the fate of the lineup's front-facing camera, its TrueDepth Face ID module, and the pill-shaped Dynamic Island software feature. Even so, one tipster has now ruled out an under-display Face ID for the iPhone Air 2, citing "thickness constraints" as the decisive factor.
Apple iPhone Air 2 won't have the requisite thickness for an under-display TrueDepth Face ID module
We reported earlier today that there appears to be a growing chorus around a fairly persistent rumor, one that suggests that the Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature a front-facing camera located in the top-left corner of the screen alongside an under-display TrueDepth module for Face ID. In the same vein, the entire pill-shaped Dynamic Island software feature is also expected to relocate to the top-left corner of the screen from its current top-center placement.
Now, another tipster has just penned an interesting thread on X, confirming Apple's ongoing testing of an under-display TrueDepth sensor for the Face ID, while also noting that Apple likely won't place the front camera and the accompanying Dynamic Island at the top-left corner of the display for the non-Pro iPhone 18 models.
As far as the iPhone Air 2 is concerned, the tipster declares that it likely won't have the requisite thickness for an under-display Face ID. As such, and we are only speculating here, Apple might retain its current implementation of the Face ID for the iPhone Air 2, or resort to a Touch ID instead, as is the case with the upcoming iPhone Fold. Do note that Apple is expected to launch the iPhone Air 2 either in the fall of 2026 or 2027.
