The only other senior designer who has worked with Apple for as long as Jony Ive, is scheduled to depart from the company. Bart Andre, who was described as one of ‘Ive’s top lieutenants,’ was part of the design team for 30 years, and with his departure later this month, there are no more top executives from the Ive era that are currently stationed at Apple. The design team will now report to Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, but that decision has caused internal dissent between individuals, as told in a recent report.

There is additional unrest growing within the design team due to cost-cutting measures introduced by the Apple COO

Andre has been helping the design team continue to release products boasting incredible designs since 1992 when he worked alongside Jony Ive. After Evans Hankey resigned in 2022, Andre took over and resumed where the previous executive left off. However, with his retirement comes another problem, as reported by Bloomberg. The design team will now be answerable to Jeff Williams, and according to people familiar with the matter, the relationship between the two parties is more than sour.

One of the reasons for this acrimonious behavior is that the design team has to report to an executive who is responsible for handling Apple’s operations, so a conflict of expertise can materialize. Secondly, Williams has introduced some cost-cutting measures, likely frustrating the team that has invested excruciatingly long hours in designing a multitude of prototypes. Thankfully, there are still a few more employees at Apple who previously served on Jony Ive’s core design team to maintain the peace; Richard Howarth, Molly Anderson, and Duncan Kerr.

It is unlikely that Andre’s departure from Apple was part of a mass exodus where early executives previously tendered in their resignations. It is possible that the senior designer believed that he had contributed sufficiently in his role of 32 years and thought that retirement would be the best course at this point.
