Apple's HomePod-iPad hybrid device to feature a squarish display and A18 chip for AI features

We have previously covered that Apple is working on a new smart home device, which appears to be a hybrid of the iPad and a HomePod. The device will also act as a hub for all HomeKit and support all devices that are compatible with Matter. While the exact design details of the hybrid device are unknown, it is now being reported that it will feature a square display and will be powered by the company's A18 Chip, the same chip that powers the new iPhone 16 lineup.

Apple's iPad-like hybrid device will house a "squarish display" and will feature an A18 chip for processing and AI features

Internally, the device is called HomeAccessory, which is now reported to feature a "squarish display," according to 9to5mac. If you are not familiar with it, the display on the iPad is rectangular, and if the news has any heft to it, the screen of the iPad-like device will be square with all four equal sides. It makes sense for the iPad to feature a rectangular display as users can adjust it in either portrait or landscape orientation.

With the rumored hybrid device, we can expect the display to remain stationary, as turning it sideways would serve no purpose. However, the device would feature a robotic arm, which would allow users to adjust the height and angle of the screen. The device was also reported to come with a camera on the front for FaceTime, and the robotic arm could be designed to follow the user wherever they go, allowing them to be in the frame all the time.

The publication claims that it is unclear at this stage whether Apple would move ahead with the square display design. The camera on the iPad-like device would also recognize hand gestures from a distance with facial recognition technology catering to different profiles. The rumored product will have Apple TV-like capabilities as well as the HomePod, allowing it to play media while also acting as an AirPlay receiver.

We have previously reported that the device will run tvOS, which makes it much closer to the Apple TV lineup than the iPad. We can suspect that the device will be an Apple TV with a display on top, which the company could transform into a smart hub with additional HomeKit features. The device will also be powered by the new A18 chip, similar to the Apple TV lineup, which could open doors for Apple Intelligence features. The company could be planning to launch it soon rather than later. This could be the reason why the company has not updated Apple TV for years. We will keep you posted at the latest, so keep an eye out.
