AMD's next-gen Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7900WX "Workstation" and Ryzen Threadripper 7900X "HEDT" CPUs have been leaked.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 "Storm Peak" CPUs Enter Mass Production: Threadripper PRO 7900WX For Workstation & Threadripper 7900 For HEDT

Prominent leaker, Momomo_US, has leaked a listing that confirms the two upcoming AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 CPU families. Both families will be based on the Zen 4 core architecture and will be featured under the Storm Peak family. We first have the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7900 CPUs as listed under the "79x5WX" family for workstation PCs and the Ryzen Threadripper 7900 CPUs as the "79x0X" family for HEDT PCs.

AMD hasn't launched Ryzen Threadripper CPUs outside of the Pro lineup since the Threadripper 3000 series. Even those were very limited on the DIY HEDT platforms and the current-gen Ryzen Threadripper 5000 was entirely aimed at "PRO". The company had to wait for its Lenovo exclusive deal to expire before opening up Threadrippers 5000 CPUs for the rest of the audience to enjoy.

Now almost two years after that, AMD will be introducing its Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Desktop CPUs on a fresh new platform and socket that supports the latest PCIe Gen 5.0 and DDR5 DRAM standards.

According to the previous leak, AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 7000 HEDT CPUs will come in both Workstation and HEDT flavors. The Workstation family will enter the top segment with 8-channel DDR5 memory support on the SP5 socket, up to 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes, and 8 PCIe Gen 3 lanes but will lack OC capabilities for both CPU & memory.

The HEDT segment is where users will get OC support for both CPU and memory but the platform will feature support for 4-channel DDR5 memory on the SP6 socket, the same as the EPYC 8004 "Siena" chips, and offer up to 64 PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes. Following is how the lineups will stack up in the HEDT segment:

  • AMD HEDT: Threadripper 7000 (5nm Zen 4) / 4-Channel DDR5 / 64 PCIe Gen 5 / 4096 SP6 Socket
  • Intel HEDT: Xeon W-2400 (10nm Golden Cove / 4-Channel DDR5 / 64 PCIe Gen 5 / LGA 4677 Socket

For the workstation segment, we have:

  • AMD WS: Threadripper 7000 (5nm Zen 4) / 8-Channel DDR5 / 128 PCIe Gen 5 / 6096 SP5 Socket
  • Intel WS: Xeon W-3400 (10nm Golden Cove / 8-Channel DDR5 / 112 PCIe Gen 5 / LGA 4677 Socket

It remains to be seen whether AMD will deliver the full 96-core Zen 4 parts on the HEDT family but if they do, that will mark a major blow to Intel's Xeon W-3400 which will only feature up to 56 cores. Intel does have its Xeon W-2400 & Xeon W-3400 shipping and available through major partners so it will be interesting to see if AMD can provide a swift response to that.
