The XRING 01 announcement was finished back in May, so it is downright impossible to expect that Xiaomi would unveil an immediate successor this early. However, the company has likely started development work on the XRING 02 because the trademark has been filed, indicating that the chipset is in its early stages. According to the latest rumor, it may take Xiaomi a while to officially launch its second in-house SoC because the XRING 02 is not just going to be found in smartphones and tablets, but potentially find its way into automobiles, but there will be a boatload of verifications required before this silicon is deployed on roads.
An earlier rumor claimed that Xiaomi is pursuing an aggressive approach with the XRING 02, and will be expanded to more product ranges
Before we discuss the latest rumor that was put out by Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, we want to mention that the same individual talked about how the XRING 02 was being evaluated to run in a variety of products, including smartwatches and cars. Given that the XRING 01 is only found in a single smartphone and two tablets, the time required to test the SoC thoroughly would be considerably less.
However, regarding the latest claims from Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi could take its sweet time with the XRING 02 because several verifications are required before any automobile featuring the silicon is allowed to begin its maiden traveling run. The XRING 02 will essentially control various aspects of the car, and there is a possibility that the chipset performs the vehicle’s diagnostics.

A plethora of tests are required because if a grim incident occurs on the road and it is found that some hardware error materializes, it will end up being a tidal wave of negative publicity for Xiaomi. The same responsibility cannot be carried over when the XRING 02 is used in smartphones, tablets, or even smartwatches because the element of human life does not come into play with these products.
Even if the XRING 02’s development pace enters the fifth gear, there is a ton of information we do not know about the SoC. For instance, the U.S. has blocked the import of advanced EDA tools for Chinese firms, and Xiaomi is no exception on that export control list. This limitation on the company will hinder it from leveraging anything other than TSMC’s second-generation 3nm ‘N3E’ process, thus increasing the technological gap with competitors. For now, it is too early to tell what Xiaomi has planned for the XRING 02, but we will keep our readers updated on the latest.
