Visceral’s Star Wars Game Will Feel Like Playing A Star Wars Movie, Team Looking At How To Implement Ensemble Cast Into Gameplay
Among the Star Wars games currently in development, the one currently in development by Visceral Games is the one we know less about. The game is still quite far from release, as it launches sometime during 2018, so it's understandable that most of its defining features are not ready to be unveiled. This, however, hasn't prevented Creative Director Amy Henning from revealing something new about the game.
Speaking during a panel at the Star Wars Celebration, Amy Henning talked about the process of deconstructing the movies to understand how they could be adapted to video games, a process that's been already used for the first three Uncharted games. This process will allow the team to create a game that will feel like a Star Wars movie.
"The end goal is by the time the player has finished playing they feel like they really did play a Star Wars film. So I've done the same thing for Star Wars. What does that mean? It's getting the structure right. It means you have to understand where the act breaks fall, where all the obstacles and reversals fall, and the set-pieces. You need to know what are all the component parts that make up a Star Wars story."
In the deconstructing and reconstructing process, Amy Henning noted how it's the ensemble cast that truly defines a Star Wars movie, with the team trying to figure out how to implement this into gameplay so that players can really feel that same type of experience.
"Characters are always outnumbered and outgunned, so they have to be smarter than their enemies, more improvisational, and work together. The challenge for us is to figure out how we enable that in gameplay so that the player really feels that experience, so that it's not just part of the story but also the gameplay. That's why you deconstruct and reconstruct."
Visceral Games' Star Wars title, which has yet to be revealed in full, will launch sometime during 2018. We will let you know more about the game as soon as possible, so stay tuned for all the latest news.
