TSMC Believes Its Impossible For Huawei “China” To Catch Up In The Semiconductor Race

TSMC, the world's leading semiconductor firm, believes that Huawei "China" & other "emerging" competitors are no trouble for the company.

TSMC Says That Their "Dominance" Is Unchallenged, And Competitors, Including China, Have No Chance

Well, there is no doubt that TSMC has been in the lead regarding process technology and the development of cutting-edge semiconductors. Mainstream competitors such as Intel Foundry and Samsung have tried to close the gap, but despite tremendous efforts, the Taiwan giant has managed to maintain its dominance, courtesy of its vast experience along with excellent relationships with established clients like Apple and NVIDIA.

Similarly, in TSMC's annual shareholder meeting held a few days ago, the firm's Chairman, Mark Liu, claimed that Huawei and similar companies are no threat to the company's consolidated positions in the market.

When asked about Huawei's progress in foundry expansion and semiconductor development, TSMC's Chairman expressed that the firm has been witnessing competition for a long time, but despite this, it has stood long and tall. TSMC showed huge optimism towards the company's future, and when asked about whether Huawei can catch up, TSMC's President Wei Zhejia claimed that it's "impossible."

TSMC considers every competitor very, very carefully. We will always have competitors. It has nothing to do with Huawei or not.

- Chairman Mark Liu

The Taiwan giant's confidence and optimism are exciting to see here since the firm believes its dominance in the markets is currently unchallenged despite developments around it. In terms of the progress being made by Huawei, the firm has expressed intentions to mass-produce 5nm and beyond processes soon but currently is facing vast yield issues simply because the primary source of semiconductor equipment supplier for the firm is SMIC, which currently relies on the older DUV equipment instead of EUV. However, Huawei has said that a semiconductor breakthrough is inevitable, and the market competition will surely increase.

TSMC, on the other end, is setting its sights on mass production of its 2nm process by 2025, and the firm has already disclosed exceptional performance and yield rate results from its associated devices. Overall, the gap between TSMC and emerging competitors from China is very large, but it's important to note that firms like Huawei and others have made huge progress in the past year. Hence, the competition in the markets is serious right now.
