TikTok to be banned in Albania for a year

A tragedy occurred in November when a 14-year-old was stabbed to death by a fellow pupil, with local media reporting that the incident happened when the two exchanged arguments over social media. With videos surfacing on TikTok of miners who supported the murder, the Albanian government has decided to pursue strict measures of banning the video-uploading app for an entire year to curb the incitement of violence among the youth.

Albanian Prime Minister said that banning TikTok is part of a broader plan to make schools safer

It is no safely guarded secret that social media plays a pivotal role in influencing the lives of minors. Just recently, we reported that Australia banned the use of social media for anyone under the age of 16 in an effort to protect their mental health. The Albanian government has followed similar measures with the banning of TikTok, with Reuters reporting that Prime Minister Edi Rama made the official announcement after meeting with parents’ groups and teachers from across the country.

Additionally, the report states that regions like Belgium, France, and Germany have placed strict restrictions on the use of social media for children, with Rama pointing fingers at TikTok for fueling violence amongst smaller age groups in school. Rama has stated that the problem exists in our society, TikTok, and other elements that are attempting to take these children hostage. TikTok has responded that it seeks urgent clarity from the government regarding the ban, with a spokesperson stating that no evidence has been found that the victim or perpetrator possessed TikTok accounts.

“We found no evidence that the perpetrator or victim had TikTok accounts, and multiple reports have in fact confirmed videos leading up to this incident were being posted on another platform, not TikTok.”

Even though the Albanian government will inform all internet service providers and carriers to place a ‘no nonsense’ ban on TikTok for a year, it is unclear of how the authorities will prevent the use of VPN to access the video-uploading platform. This question has yet to be answered, but we will have all the necessary updates ready for you.
