The impressive The Witcher 3 Online mod, which introduced a multiplayer mode to PC players earlier this year, has become even better today with its massive 3.0 update. Besides being able to explore the Continent together, this milestone achievement from the modding community introduces full support for Gwent online multiplayer - effectively resurrecting CD Projekt Red's standalone card game spin-off that officially closed down back in 2023. With the Polish developer reportedly mapping out the franchise's official multiplayer future, this fan-driven revival lands at a perfect time.

Full Gwent Match Synchronization Arrives in Update 3.0

Support for Gwent multiplayer matches in The Witcher 3 doesn't stop at the basics, just offering players the opportunity to play the card game against human players with pre-made decks. The 3.0 update brings full match sync, meaning that players can use the exact cards and decks they have collected in the game, so all the progress is kept intact as if it were a regular game of Gwent in the single-player campaign.

Needless to say, this is huge for any fan of The Witcher 3 playing the game on PC, as well as for any old Gwent aficionado. Although Gwent: The Witcher Card Game began its life as an online multiplayer rendition of the game's minigame, as I well remember from testing the very first version of the game during Gamescom 2016, over time, the title changed a lot, as is expected for a live-service game. As such, The Witcher 3 Online mod now offers that same pure, unadulterated (and quite unbalanced) Gwent experience that many have missed for years.

CD Projekt Red’s Multiplayer Future

The aforementioned Gwent: The Witcher Card Game was CD Projekt Red's first foray into a multiplayer experience, and we have now learned it won't be the last. The Polish developer is reportedly now working on a new free-to-play multiplayer game for PC and mobile platforms, alongside the series' next single-player experiences - the recently announced The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past expansion and The Witcher 4. And who knows, a new rendition of online Gwent could be among the features of this new multiplayer project.
