Tesla’s Model-Y Comes With Dual Motors And Faces Stiff Competition
Tesla Inc is Elon Musk’s attempt to commercialize electric vehicles. The company itself is known for ups and downs, which would better suit a roller coaster than a car. It isn’t easy to break traditional norms and impress Wall Street – which is why Musk and his company are often in the cross-hairs of regulatory authorities. Well, Tesla just launched the Model-Y, another SUV that aiming to satisfy users that fall into Musk’s demographic i.e. middle-aged men with children. Tesla’s Model-Y Has Four Configurations And A Starting Price Of $39,000 With A Maximum Operating Range Of 320 Miles
At the Model-Y’s launch event yesterday, Musk admitted the problems Tesla has faced with manufacturing cars and went on to draw comparisons between his company and Ford. He also put all of Tesla’s cars on stage. The last one of these was the Model-Y in Blue. One thing that struck us about the Model-Y is how Tesla is still influenced by Porsche’s aesthetics. The Model-Y has the same ‘sloping’ bumper and grille design as Porsche’s cars, despite the fact that Tesla moved away from the European company a while back.
The Model-Y comes in four options, and each is designed with a specific user in mind. The least expensive of these is the Standard Rear Wheel Drive variant which has a $39,000 price tag. The car has a range of 230 miles accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. The top speed for this variant is 120 mph.
The second Model-Y variant is the Long Range Rear Wheel Drive, which has a $49,000 price tag. This car has a range of 320 miles, accelerates to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and can go as fast as 130 mph. The Long Range All Wheel Drive is slightly faster but has a shorter range. It can go as far as 280 miles and accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, with a 135 mph top speed. The LR-AWD Model-Y has a $53,000 price tag and has two motors.
At the high-end of the spectrum is the Performance Model-Y that has a $64,000 price tag and accelerates to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. It can go as fast as 150 mph, and like the LR-AWD has a 280-mile operating range. Unfortunately, the Model-Y does not feature Tesla’s trademark Falcon doors, as the system is too expensive and complex to integrate into a car expected to increase the company’s market share.
Tesla’s dual-motor system uses computers to control the traction sent to the rear and front wheels, allowing for better handling and traction control. This system has led Musk to claim that the Model-Y, despite its bulky build, will handle just like a sports car. The Model-Y is available in five colors: Black, Silver, Blue, White and Red. You can choose wheel sizes from 18″ to 20″ for the car. Additionally, the car can seat 7 people at an additional cost of $3,000. Auto-pilot and self-driving capability will further set you back by $8,000*. Adding both of these after delivery will cost you $11,000.
Tesla expects first Model-Y deliveries to start by 2020, and if you’re interested in the entry-level car, then you’ll have to wait an additional year. These schedules come from a company who’s notorious for manufacturing problems, but right now, Musk seems to have gotten the Gigafactory under control. Tesla also has a host of other competitors that will deliver cars similar to the Model-Y.
This list includes Audi and Volkswagen, who have cars that promise up to 420 kilometers* in range with zero-emissions. While Tesla’s biggest problem is scaling up, both these companies have well established operational backbones that provide them with a solid advantage over the American company.
