State of Decay 2, the sequel to the unique zombie survival game launched by Undead Labs on Xbox 360 and PC, is probably getting an official release date soon.

To begin with, the ESRB just officialized the Mature (M) rating for State of Decay 2, hinting that they've played a content complete version of the game. In case you're curious about their description, we've embedded it below.

This is a third-person action/simulation game in which players assume the role of survivors in a zombie apocalypse. Players explore small towns and rural settings, locate survivors, and battle hordes of swarming zombies. Players use baseball bats, meat cleavers, machetes, grenades, and machine guns to kill zombies in frenetic melee-style combat. Several weapons allow players to crush/maim zombies' heads; grenade blasts also depict blood and dismemberment. If other human survivors become infected or ill, players can choose to “euthanize” them by shooting them in the head at close range, resulting in decapitation and large blood-splatter effects. During the course of the game, players can build an infirmary in which they can craft painkillers and opiates; specific drugs referenced include Herbal Remedy, Painkillers, Opiates, Amphetamines, and Pentamezin (a fictional prescription drug). The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” appear in the dialogue.

In December, Undead Labs Community Manager Nicole also said on Reddit that the development team is pretty confident to hit the scheduled Spring release window. She then basically confirmed that they are ready to share a lot more details about State of Decay 2, which is due to be available for Windows 10 PC and Xbox One with cross-platform play and cross-buy, as soon as Microsoft gives them the green light to do so. This should happen in early January, so it could be this week.

State of Decay 2's big new feature so far is the ability to play cooperatively with up to four players, which fans had been requesting for quite a while; the playable area will be substantially larger, too. We'll see whether there are any additional aces left in the pocket of Undead Labs now that all the features will have to be revealed.
