The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is officially "still in development," as confirmed by Saber Interactive CCO Tim Willits in a new interview with IGN. The statement provides a rare moment of reassurance for a fanbase that has spent years wondering if the project had quietly joined the list of canceled projects of the past few months.
Unfortunately, this is where the good news ends today. Willits did not provide any additional information on the remake, saying that confirming its development status is all that he could say. “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say,” the CEO noted, keeping further details under wraps.
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake was originally announced for PlayStation 5 and PC back in 2021, but since its reveal trailer, which did not show any gameplay, we haven't heard or seen anything concrete on the title. Some time after its announcement, it was reported that development wasn't progressing smoothly, leading to an indefinite delay and the removal of the original developer, Aspyr.
Back in late 2023, however, we heard some damning rumors about the project, suggesting that the KOTOR remake was not being worked on in any capacity. Thankfully, that proved not to be the case.
Although work on the game is continuing, the lack of any other information suggests that it will be a while longer until we hear more about it and how it will modernize the original's real-time with pause combat (which, at one point, was rumored to feature two combat modes).
With its spiritual successor, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, still being quite a ways off as well, fans who are also RPG enthusiasts will have to plead with the Force for quite a bit of patience. Hopefully, the wait for both projects will be worth it in the end, and it sounds like it will for the KOTOR Remake, as a known insider is impressed by what Saber is building.
