With AI expected to act as a foundational pillar for generating economic growth in the decades to come, it is not a surprise that governments around the globe are now attempting to geofence critical elements of this still-nascent technology in what is being dubbed as sovereign AI plays. In this vein, the US has just taken a major step toward "safe and trustworthy AI innovation" by inking agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic.

As a presumably first step towards the eventual goal of geofencing America's AI tech for strategic purposes, the U.S. Department of Commerce's AI Safety Institute has now now inked agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic to collaborate on "AI safety research, testing, and evaluation."

Under the signed MoUs, the AI Safety Institute will receive access to "major new models from each company prior to and following their public release."

This access will allow the U.S. government to assess the actual capabilities of new AI models and collaborate with their progenitor entities to mitigate associated risks. Interestingly, the U.S. AI Safety Institute plans to work closely with its counterpart in the UK to assess and mitigate risks associated with artificial intelligence-related innovation at OpenAI and Anthropic.

Meanwhile, just yesterday, NVIDIA's CFO Colette Kress touched on the emerging sovereign AI paradigm during the company's earnings call by noting:

"We believe sovereign AI revenue will reach low double-digit billions this year."

NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang also expounded on this phenomenon:

"They [sovereign countries] have to use AI, build their own AI infrastructure so that they could have their own digital intelligence."

Bear in mind that Huang thinks there is a $1 trillion dollar opportunity as data centers transition to accelerated computing to handle the ever-increasing AI workload.

Critically, a material proportion of this investment will be driven by sovereign AI plays in the years to come. After all, sovereign AI is about to become a critical element of national security in major economies across the globe, necessitating that governments establish some sort of national control or oversight on a technology that will be the bread and butter for driving economic prosperity and productivity.
