Snapdragon 636 Announced: 40% Performance Increase, 600Mbps-Capable Modem and Up to 24MP Sensor


The new and improved Snapdragon 636 mobile platform is official and offers a wide range of improvements, both as a chipset and when pitted against the Snapdragon 630. It is also running a custom-made CPU from Qualcomm, which the company says that it will result in improved gaming performance and add to the efficiency metric at the same time.

A 10nm FinFET architecture would have offered more energy and performance benefits across the board, but the 14nm FinFET lithography will also promote such elements to encourage manufacturers to use them in devices clamoring very competitive prices. With the Snapdragon 636, Qualcomm states that it will deliver a 40 percent performance increase when compared to the Snapdragon 630 thanks to the new and improved Kryo 260 processor.

Supplementing the performance of the processor is the Adreno 509 GPU, which is expected to provide a 10 percent performance bump in gaming and browsing experiences. While these are impressive, what will also matter is performance in the wireless speed race, and thankfully the newly announced SoC features a Snapdragon X12 4G LTE modem.

Accompanying these performance increases are newer technologies from Qualcomm including TruPalette and EcoPix and they happen to be a part of the Adreno Visual Processing Subsystem. The Assertive Display technology means that you will be able to witness the panel more vividly in less than optimal lighting. Looking at how many manufacturers have started to produce phones featuring an FHD+ resolution, this addition will also provide support for this resolution.

The octa-core processor belonging to the Snapdragon 636 will max out at 1.8GHz, and the chip itself can support up to 8GB RAM. In case you’re wondering, Quick Charge 4.0 is also supported. Qualcomm’s 14-bit Spectra 160 ISP will work with sensors up to 24MP, offering upgraded features such as zero shutter lag, smooth zoom, snappy autofocus and true-to-life colors.

Several phone makers are expected to shy away from the Snapdragon 630 and gear their vision towards a more effective solution, like the Snapdragon 636. Hopefully, this SoC can bridge the performance gap between the lower and higher chip spectrum.
