The 2nm GAA process is not the only advancement Samsung is implementing in its future Exynos chipsets, as a new report suggests that the company will integrate a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) into the SoC’s 5G modem. In short, the baseband chip will gain AI-powered capabilities that will be necessary for real-time and efficient satellite communications.
Apple introduced the life-saving feature with the iPhone 14, calling it Emergency SOS via satellite. Based on the latest report, companies like Samsung will refine it; however, the company has yet to introduce something similar to its Galaxy lineup of smartphones. Perhaps the Exynos 2600 will usher in a new beginning next year when it powers a host of devices.
Efforts to bring enhanced satellite connectivity could be disrupted by Samsung’s new Exynos chipset
An executive from Samsung’s semiconductor division met with SpaceX, with Hankyung sharing that the reason for this meeting was to discuss the state of development for a new Exynos SoC that could disrupt the existing communications industry by interacting with low-orbit satellites in the shortest time possible.
Some unnamed analysts speculate that Samsung is attempting to enter a supply chain being built by SpaceX, and that is through an Exynos chipset whose 5G modem will have an integrated NPU. Existing SoCs currently have a limitation in directly communicating with 10,000 low-orbit satellites and providing that information to terminals, which, in this case, would be smartphones.
In short, the modem would obtain enhanced AI capabilities that would not just predict satellite movements and communicate beam status in real time, but also maximize signal strength. As usual, more details about this Exynos chipset are missing, particularly the part of whether the silicon in question is the Exynos 2600. The latter was previously rumored to feature a standalone 5G modem that would reduce the chipset’s efficiency.
