Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full campaign remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), the game that proved beyond doubt that consoles could host amazing shooter games. rebuilt as a modern release while keeping the core story and feel of the classic intact. However, they added three brand-new prequel missions and broader co-op support to the original adventure.

Genre and Setting
Just like the original game, this is a first-person shooter set in a sci-fi universe where mankind is embroiled in a desperate galactic war against the Covenant, a religious hegemony of multiple alien species that has controlled a large portion of the Orion Arm in the Milky Way Galaxy for thousands of years.
Series protagonist Master Chief, a Spartan-II supersoldier of the UNSC Navy's Special Weapons division, returns as the lead, while fan-favorite non-player character Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson is featured prominently in the new story content. The added mission arc, called Operation: Meteorite, takes place before the events of the main campaign, expanding the setting with new environments, enemies (including the Brutes, who were absent from the original campaign), and characters, while staying within the established Halo framework. There are even some space combat segments, as seen in the footage.

Gameplay Mechanics and Features
The remake keeps the original campaign structure but updates the level design (which drew some criticism from original designer Jaime Griesemer), controls, wayfinding, cinematics, and combat flow. Halo Studios has also added a campaign remix system with Skulls, designed to increase replayability through combat modifiers, enemy variations, and randomized elements.
Several mechanics from later Halo games are now folded into this version of the original campaign, including sprinting, vehicle hijacking, drivable Wraith sections, and the use of nine additional iconic weapons, such as the Energy Sword. Co-op support includes 2-player split-screen on console and up to 4-player online play with crossplay, shared progression, and cross-progression across console and PC.

Tech and Specs
Halo: Campaign Evolved is built on Unreal Engine 5, marking a major technical shift for the series, which previously used proprietary engines, such as the so-called Slipspace Engine that powered Halo Infinite. while still layering new content on top of legacy gameplay code to preserve the original Halo feel. Microsoft is promoting the remake's overhauled visuals, improved animations, a remastered soundtrack, entirely rebuilt sound design, and newly recorded voice work. Granted, not everyone is a fan: Niles Sankey, who worked on Combat Evolved as lead mission designer, warned that the visual overhaul could impact tactical readability.
On the platform side, the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, letting players buy once and play on Xbox console and PC. Halo Studios also released detailed PC system requirements for Halo: Campaign Evolved, and we know ray tracing will be supported.
