Google has started rolling out February security updates to Nexus and Pixel devices. This brings Android 7.1.1 Nougat officially to Nexus 6P. Here are all the steps and links to update and root Nexus 6P to Android 7.1.1 Nougat official firmware.
Prerequisites to flash Android 7.1.1 for Nexus 6P
- Create a backup of all important data on your Nexus 6P.
- Download and install USB drivers for Nexus on your computer.
- The Nexus bootloader should be unlocked.
- Enable USB debugging option by pressing Menu > Settings > Applications. Navigate and tap on Developer Options to enable USB Debugging.
- Ensure that your Nexus carries more than 70% of charge.
How to flash N4F26O Android 7.1.1 for Nexus 6P
Required files: Download N4F26O Android 7.1.1 factory image for your Nexus 6P from here.
- Connect your Nexus 6P to your PC using a USB cable and turn it off.
- Now, start the device in Fastboot mode: turn on the phone while pressing and holding the Volume Down + Power keys until you see the Fastboot menu and the START text on top.
- Extract the downloaded Nougat file anywhere on your PC. Go to _N4F26O_ folder and copy/paste all the files to your Fastboot directory (which often is the platform-tools folder inside the Android SDK directory).
- This step involves flashing the factory image to your Nexus phone. Open the folder containing the factory image downloaded and extracted. In the address bar, type cmd and type the command written below and press enter. ectory. Create the directory if not already there.
- Windows: Run flash-all.bat
- Mac: Run flash-all.sh using Terminal
- Linux: Run flash-all.sh
Once the script finishes running, your Nexus will reboot. First boot may take up to 5 minutes, so don't be worried if it takes your device longer than usual to boot up. Root N4F26O Android 7.1.1 for Nexus 6P
Required files:
- Download Android SDK and install it. Set it up with platform-tools and USB drivers package in SDK.
- Download SuperSU v2.79 for your Nexus device on your PC.
- Make sure to have a custom recovery tool like CWM, or TWRP: TWRP 3.0.2.0 (or 3.0.2-2) for Nexus 6P
- Also, download Fastboot from the following links, depending on your OS and extract it in android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory. Create the directory if not already there.
Step 1: Connect your Nexus 6P to your computer via USB.
Step 2: Copy and paste SuperSu zip file to your device's SD card root folder.
Step 3: Turn your Nexus 6P off.
Step 4: Enter the Bootloader mode: power your Nexus on while pressing and holding Volume Down + Power keys.
Step 5: Go to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory and open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt) and type the following command:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-angler.img - replace with twrp-3.0.2-2 if you used the latest recovery version.
Step 6: Once done, enter recovery mode by choosing Recovery from the Fastboot menu.
Step 7: In the recovery mode (CWM or TWRP - menu options will differ a little), scroll to flash zip from SD card > choose zip from sdcard.
Step 8: Using the volume keys, locate SuperSU-v2.79 zip file and select it. Confirm the installation process.
Step 9: After installation is completed, go to +++++Go Back and reboot your Nexus device. First boot may take a few minutes.
Your Nexus 6P is now updated and rooted on Android 7.1.1 N4F26O. You can verify the root with any Root Checker app.
