With the launch of the Pixel 9 series, users were eagerly anticipating not just the new upgrades it would be bringing forward but also the hope for the incorporation of the Qi12 wireless charging that is based on Apple's MagSafe technology. While the charging standard was launched in 2023, it did not make it to the Pixel 8 series. It was expected that Google might decide to step into the bandwagon with the upcoming series, but much to the tech community's dismay, this did not happen, and the company has explained why.
The Pixel 9 series did not adopt the Qi2 wireless charging as Google does not see a point in making the change right now
Since the latest Qi12 charging standard was launched a year ago and introduced magnetic alignment, which mirrored Apple's Magsafe technology, users have been waiting for the Android flagship devices to be released with wireless charging. The expectation was that the Pixel 8 series would be shipped with it; however, it is understandable if Google could not add this up at the last minute before the release of its series.
Users were now anticipating the upgrade to make it to the Pixel 9 series but were disappointed when the latest series did not adopt the charging standard and followed the old Qi system instead. As reported by Android Authority, Google has presented its reasoning for not going ahead with the technology, and it is due to the older protocol being more widely available in the market and Google finding no reason to make the switch right now as it does not think it will bring any tangible benefit at the moment.
Qi12, for those unfamiliar with the wireless charging standard, is meant to provide a faster charging speed that can go up to 15W and can be used with any wireless charger contrary to other charging speeds offered. With the magnetic locking system it provides, the charging process is optimized with the help of perfect alignment of the phone and the charger. This alignment helps provide a consistent charging experience without many fluctuations and improves charging efficiency overall.
Users can use the magnets to attach accessories just like Apple enthusiasts do with MagSafe's magnetic ring by adding tripods or even stands at the back of the phone. Google must have its reasoning for not incorporating the Qi12 with the Pixel 9 series, and we can hope the upgrade makes its way with the launch of the Galaxy S25 next year.
