In August, Microsoft Japan conducted an experiment in its Japan offices. The project was called Work-Life Choice Challenge Summer 2019, which gave the entire workforce of 2300 people five Fridays off consecutively. The pay was not decreased and the results turned out to be quite positive.

The four-day workweek from Microsoft Japan's experiment allowed for more efficient meetings, happier workers and enhanced productivity. To be precise, the productivity levels were increased by a staggering 40 percent. As part of the program, the company planned to subsidize family vacations for the workforce with up to $920.

The meeting times were reduced to 30 minutes and encouraged online chats instead of face to face chats. 92 percent of the workers who responded to a survey said that they were pleased with the four-day workweek. Furthermore, apart from productivity, employees took 25 percent less time off and electricity was down 23 percent in the office.

While Microsoft Japan's test was a success and it does potentially pose a solution to Japan's long working hours. This is due to the fact that the region faces a labor shortage and the aging population.
