Portal RTX with AMD Gets FSR 3.1 Support, Greatly Improving Visual Definition

Portal RTX launched in late 2022 as the premiere demonstration of NVIDIA's RTX Remix remastering toolset. Empowered with technologies like NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and even full path tracing, it was a stunning graphics showcase that remained out of reach for PC users with AMD graphics cards.

However, the modding team at NightSightProductions has recently released a mod that allows Portal RTX to work with AMD GPUs. Whereas the first iteration used TAAU, a new update has now introduced support for FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1, greatly increasing visual crispness.

We here at NightSightProductions think you should be able to experience Portal RTX without the need for an RTX GPU, so we pushed the limits of AMD hardware once again. This mod includes a runtime patch for RDNA 2, RDNA 3, and more to help performance. We also included custom presets based on extensive testing and research. This mod also now adds FSR 3.1 into the game, which provides superior upscaling compared to the previous NIS and TAA-U.

The installation is fairly straightforward. Users need to select their operating system and GPU architecture and then drag and drop the files included in the dxvk-patch into the .trex folder located in Portal RTX/bin. Then, they must do the same with one of the RTX.conf presets, copying it into the Portal RTX directory.

The team has tested the following AMD GPUs and resolutions:

  • RX 7600 at 1080p 60fps (Windows Medium Preset)
  • RX 7900 GRE at 1440p 60fps (Windows Ultra Preset)
  • RX 6400 at 720p 30fps (Windows Low Preset)
  • RX 7900XTX at 2160p 60fps (Linux High Preset)

If you're feeling really brave, the team has even released a mod that makes the game run on the Steam Deck, although as you can see in the screenshot above, it kind of defeats the whole point of the graphics showcase.

That's not all, though. The team also just launched Portal Prelude RTX for AMD (and Steam Deck, too), allowing AMD users to check out even the RTX remaster of the fan-favorite community mod.

In other Portal mod news, modders are also attempting to make the sequel work with RTX Remix, and the early results are promising.
