The PlayStation 5 Pro Enhance PSSR Image Quality toggle will not be updated in the future even when new versions of the upscaling tech are released, PlayStation 5 Lead System Architect Mark Cerny confirmed in a new interview with Digital Foundry (as reported on Reddit by Dream Corridor). Cerny cited the need to set a standard for the community regarding the feature as the primary reason for this decision.

"The current strategy is that it will be fixed, i.e. even if there are updated network parameters for the most recent PS5 Pro games, those parameters will not be applied when the Enhance feature is used," Cerny said. "That allows the PS5 Pro community to provide clear guidance on how and when to use the Enhance feature – conversely, if the parameters were continually being updated then that guidance would be much harder to provide."

With the PSSR Image Quality toggle not receiving updates in the future, games that only support the first version of the upscaler will only receive the current improvements for the foreseeable future, unless developers provide manual updates. Similarly, if a PSSR 3.0 version ever launches, games supporting the PSSR 2.0 version of the upscaler (such as Saros, which will feature a sharp image quality almost indistinguishable from native 4K) will not receive any automated improvements via the system toggle unless they receive dedicated patches or if Sony reverses this decision in the future.

As of now, the PlayStation 5 Pro PSSR Image Quality toggle not getting updated is not an immediate issue, as PSSR 2.0 only launched last week, introducing significant image quality improvements in several titles, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Control, Alan Wake 2, Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill f, and Monster Hunter Wilds. These improvements bode extremely well for the future of the tech, which is likely to eventually include frame generation, as it will undoubtedly be a central feature for the upcoming PlayStation 6, which may face a significant upgrade challenge even with the benefits AI upscaling will bring to games
