The popular Helldivers 2 is the rare modern game that launched on PC without supporting any major upscaling technology like NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR, but this is set to change next week, on May 27, with the release of a new set of technical improvements (whose implementation is sadly broken). Console users will also get some of these improvements, but PlayStation 5 Pro players will inevitably be disappointed by the decision not to bring support for the latest iteration of the PSSR upscaler.
"We’re excited to announce a new set of technical improvements, deploying May 27th. In collaboration with our partners at Nixxes, this release brings a range of long-awaited updates across all platforms," wrote developer Arrowhead Game Studios in a new post shared on Steam. "Every frame counts when the pressure is on. This update focuses on three primary pillars: stability, latency reduction, and advanced upscaling technologies - helping ensure performance stays consistent, even in the most demanding moments."
The first part of these new technical improvements coming to Helldivers 2 next week is upscaling support to ensure "maximum visual clarity without sacrificing performance."
- PC: FSR (High-End): 4.0.3 (on supported GPUs), FSR 3.1.5, DLSS 4.5, and XeSS 3.0 support.
- PS5 Pro: PSSR 1
- PS5: FSR 3.1
- Xbox: FSR 3.1
While these will be quite welcome to the community, which has been asking for upscaling support for a long while, seeing the PlayStation 5 Pro version only get PSSR 1 support is definitely disappointing, given how much better the upgraded version launched earlier this year is. Hopefully, support for this improved version of the upscaler will be coming at a later time.
On PC and consoles, Helldivers 2 is also getting a slew of advanced visual optimizations, including Variable Refresh Rate and Variable Rate Shading support, Dynamic Resolution Scaling, and more.
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR): Now supported for PS5 and PS5 Pro to reduce any potential stuttering from V-Sync without screen tearing on supported displays.
- Variable Rate Shading (VRS): This technology intelligently reduces shading rates in certain areas of the image, decreasing GPU load while maintaining visual quality where it matters.
- Dynamic Resolution Scaling (DRS): Integrated for both PS5, Xbox Series X and PC to maintain stable frame rates during more graphically demanding scenarios.
- Resolution Updates: Increased resolution to 1440p in the “Performance” preset on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as well as the “Quality” preset on PS5 Power Saving Mode.
The technical improvements coming to Helldivers 2 on May 27 are only the beginning. Besides keeping a close eye on all hardware configurations and gaming hardware after the launch of these improvements, Arrowhead will bring further enhancements in a dedicated tech-focused update scheduled to launch this Summer.
