We have been hearing about OpenAI being in talks with Apple's former employee, Jony Ive, for quite some time over a possible partnership to excel further in its AI ambitions. However, it seems that the deal has finally borne fruit. On Wednesday, OpenAI officially finalized its plan of acquiring the hardware startup co-founded by Jony Ive, marking a significant leap as it intends to step into an AI-powered hardware category. The news was shared through a joint letter by Sam Altman and Ive.
OpenAI has now officially acquired io Products, the hardware startup by Jony Ive, to expand beyond software and into hardware
OpenAI has been actively looking to expand its domain beyond software and into a new category that is laser-focused on AI-powered hardware. To take its ambitions ahead, it has been collaborating with Apple's former designer Jony Ive for quite some time, and it seems to be that all the behind the scenes discussions have been materialized as OpenAI has finally finalized its deal of acquiring Jony Ive's hardware startup, to be now referred to as io Products Inc. The $6.5 billion acquisition is meant to focus on consumer-facing AI devices that offer a blend of advanced AI and top-notch design.
While Jony Ive's LoveFrom will remain independent, the io Products team is now part of OpenAI. Jony Ive will play a vital role in shaping OpenAI's creative vision and leading the design for the AI-powered devices. Many other former Apple design team members will also aid in shaping the hardware. Meanwhile, OpenAI will focus on the artificial intelligence aspect.
Initially, the intention of joining hands with Jony Ive's startup was shared in May by OpenAI, but now with the official merger news being out, both companies have shared their excitement, and the tech community also seems to be hooked on what this partnership would bring about. While speculations have already started emerging about the first device from the collaboration, it seems like the two are focusing on bringing a pocket-sized device, contrary to the expectations of a wearable.
However, the device would offer a more intuitive AI experience by being more contextually aware and aiming to change how we interact with technology. This collaboration is a big step as two visionaries come together, and we are excited to see the product category that would emerge as a result.
