Qualcomm is not the only company to claim that the Snapdragon X Elite is faster than Apple’s M3, as Microsoft is also planning a slew of comparisons to showcase the upcoming chipset’s capabilities. According to people familiar with the software giant’s plans, it intends to reveal some demos of the notebook silicon in an attempt to highlight that the M3 is the inferior SoC.
In multi-core performance, Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon X Elite is 21 percent faster than the M3, conveniently leaves out single-core results
Microsoft is gearing up for its event in Seattle next month, with The Verge reporting that the Snapdragon X Elite and Apple’s M3 MacBook Air will be the center of conversation. Apparently, the technology giant is confident that Qualcomm’s flagship laptop SoC will beat the M3 in both CPU and AI-accelerated tasks. Earlier, it was reported that the M3’s multi-core performance was being downplayed by Qualcomm, stating that the Snapdragon X Elite is 21 percent faster.
However, the San Diego firm cleverly left out single-core performance, as it knows that Apple’s chipsets are currently unbeaten in this category. Internal documents have mentioned Microsoft’s claims revolving around upcoming Windows AI PCs as having ‘faster app emulation than Rosetta 2,’ which is the translation layer that Apple Silicon employs to run applications designed for 64-bit Intel CPUs. Additionally, Qualcomm has made lofty remarks regarding the Snapdragon X Elite’s gaming prowess, saying that the SoC will be able to run most games.
The company is not incorrect in its statement, but there is much left to be desired because, at the 1080p resolution, Baldur’s Gate 3 ran at 30FPS at low settings, and Control, Remedy’s 2019 title, ran just below 40FPS in non-combat areas. Regardless, these are significantly better results than what Apple’s chipsets have achieved, and it took the firm three years to bring improved gaming capabilities and hardware-accelerated ray tracing support to the M3 lineup.
It goes without saying that the Snapdragon X Elite may have an edge against the M3 in a multitude of tests, but we want readers to remember that this cannot be an ‘apples to apples’ comparison because the M3 only sports an 8-core CPU, while the Snapdragon X Elite has a 12-core configuration while touting eight performance cores. A fair comparison would be pitting the Snapdragon X Elite and the M3 Pro, but nearly everyone knows that the latter would emerge as the victor. In any case, Microsoft’s upcoming event will be held on May 20, and we will have all the updates ready for you.
