The former Forza Horizon developers at Maverick Games have finally revealed the open-world driving game they've been developing since the studio was formed and publicly revealed back in 2023. The game is called Clutch, and while a bigger reveal will take place later this week during the opening event for Summer Game Fest, the introductory video shown today featuring creative director and chief executive officer Mike Brown, does give us a sneak peek at what to expect from Clutch.
"This is a game about the love of driving, about the connection between car and driver and the raw thrill, of speed," Brown says in the trailer as he introduces Clutch. What follows is a very cinematic look at cars driving down picturesque roads as Brown goes on to explain the main thrust of Clutch's story. A pair of siblings who both happen to be racing prodigies with dreams of topping the R1K racing series.
Alongside the professional R1K series is an underground racing scene called the Midnight Collective, which the siblings also find themselves in. Clutch brings both worlds together in one game, and it'll be interesting to see how the game's story presents both worlds.
While Brown doesn't necessarily dig into the game's story, saving those details to come in this week's SGF presentation, he does dig into how the team at Maverick Games have painstakingly gone over the everyday details that come with owning, driving, and loving a car, and brought them into Clutch.
Details as small as the items you might leave on your car's dashboard or in the passenger seat, like a sweater you wore but didn't end up needing, so it lands in the seat next to you. Trinkets to keep on your dashboard, or even a parking ticket you've been meaning to pay that has lived on your dash since you found it on your windshield.
Clutch was developed with Unreal Engine 5, and already looks like it'll be a technical showpiece of a game. It's also the same game that Amazon dropped earlier this year, though it's clear that Maverick used the funding it got from Amazon in the past three years well, and made a game that should have less trouble finding a partner, if it still needs one to get over the finish line.
Hopefully, the reveal at Summer Game Fest later this week also tells us when we'll be able to get our hands on Clutch and that it's sooner than later.
