The successor to the MacBook Neo is reportedly planned for a 2027 launch, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Where Apple’s newest $599 notebook ships with a myriad of trade-offs, the MacBook Neo 2 could address those limitations, along with providing a handy feature that’s present in 50 percent of Chromebooks, or so we thought. According to the latest update from Kuo, this addition won’t be a part of the specifications, but there’s a reason for that.
The design for the MacBook Neo 2 would probably be unchanged; adding a touchscreen would force Apple to bring a revamped hinge, raising production costs
In Kuo’s latest post on X, he states that the MacBook Neo’s production happened three months later than previously expected, resulting in the 2026 shipment forecast being lower. In the first half of 2026, the affordable portable Mac is estimated to reach between 2 million and 2.5 million units, which is a healthy figure and will likely prompt Apple to push through with a MacBook Neo 2 release as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, the newer version will lack a touchscreen, which, depending on your daily usage, could be a nothingburger or a complete deal-breaker, making Chromebooks the superior alternative in this one area only. To be fair, omitting a touchscreen will likely be the first decision that Apple makes with the MacBook Neo 2, since the MacBook Neo’s chassis has been tailor-made for trackpad and keyboard use first.
Assuming a touchscreen is added, even small presses would wobble the display, making it a subpar user experience. Knowing Apple, it would rather introduce a revamped hinge on the MacBook Neo 2 as it has reportedly planned on the redesigned OLED M6 MacBook Pro, but given that it will be a costly part, the touchscreen won’t make the cut.
What we’re looking forward to are some notable changes that the MacBook Neo is missing, starting with sufficient memory. With the A19 Pro, which is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, the MacBook Neo 2 will sate the requirements of millions. Additionally, Apple could also introduce a Force Touch trackpad, keyboard lighting, and a faster SSD to make the newer version a far superior machine.
The MacBook Neo has officially gone on sale on Amazon, starting from $599 for the 256GB model and $699 for the 512GB version. If you can spare a higher budget for Apple’s portable Macs, we highly recommend checking out our detailed buying guide that compares the MacBook Neo and M5 MacBook Air, highlighting why that $500 price difference makes sense.
