The internet remains undefeated in figuring out hints ahead of The Game Awards, and this year's big, secretive tease was a giant statue in the Mojave Desert that could be described as a demonic monolith. A patent pointed to Larian Studios, which in turn indicated a new game in its Divinity franchise. Tonight at The Game Awards 2025, a new trailer confirmed what everyone had suspected.
If you didn't just discover Larian Studios with the release of Baldur's Gate 3, you'll know that the Divinity series is the bigger of the two when it comes to the fantasy RPG franchises Larian has under its belt. Once it was clear that Larian wasn't going to be making Baldur's Gate 4 as its next project, a return to the Divinity series is what many players suspected, and those suspicions were clearly well-placed.
The trailer is just a cinematic look at the game, but it is an excellent trailer in terms of giving you a sense of the atmosphere and tone that Larian is going for with this new release. It's not been given a number, but it'll be the seventh game in the Divinity series overall.
In a press release, the developer has clarified that this is their biggest and most ambitious game yet, defying Larian CEO Swen Vincke's original post-BG3 wish to make something smaller. Although this is a brand new game that doesn’t require experience with previous Larian titles, the developer said that players of Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 will find it easier to grasp the continuity.
Vincke said in a statement:
Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled ‘Divinity.’ We’re ready to bring everything we’ve done previously into one place. This marks the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before. We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make and you're going to have loads of fun with it.
What's interesting about this announcement, though, is the timing. Larian has only released their final major Baldur's Gate 3 patch a few months ago. There's also the fact that Vincke spoke about their next project last year, saying, "it needs a lot more time in the oven. By the time it's going to be finished, it's going to be so big! For the time being, you're going to have to wait."
So work on Divinity must be early on, and while an announcement now could be an effort in recruitment as it tries to grow the development team to build this project, it could also mean that Larian will take the same approach it took with Baldur's Gate 3, which was to release it as an early access game first, and continue developing it to 1.0 alongside players.
Whatever the case, we'll probably have to wait quite a while to find out. For all of our coverage of The Game Awards 2025, check out our hub page here.
