Apple’s new iPhone Air has been making headlines since its launch, and not just because of its ultra-thin design but also because of its surprising change in hardware. The device packs its entire brain in the camera plateau on top, which is pretty evident from the outside. One of the major compromises the company had to make was a single-speaker setup compared to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro’s stereo setup.
Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air sacrifices stereo audio, offering only a single earpiece speaker to achieve its slim design
To make the design possible, Apple had to go through a lot of compromises, with the battery being one of the biggest aspects that took a hit. The company did what it could to offer peak efficiency with custom chips, but it is still not enough for the device to last an entire day. The company did introduce a MagSafe battery pack, which would allow it to reach the level of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but an add-on is not an appealing option. Apart from the battery, the company also compromised with the speaker, offering only a single, mono speaker in the earpiece.
The company has offered a dual-speaker setup since the iPhone 7, and it is certain now that there will be some trade-offs associated with the slimmer design. The iPhone Air measures an astonishing 5.5mm in thickness, making it one of the slimmest smartphones ever produced.
For casual users, this may not be a dealbreaker, as the iPhone Air is still packed with the same premium hardware and software refinements that users have been expecting. However, for those who often stream music, watch movies, or play games on their phones, the absence of stereo audio could feel like a step back, especially if you are migrating from an older iPhone model.
Apple has not commented on the change, but it is clear that it is prioritizing design slimness over audio hardware. Despite its shortcomings, the iPhone Air is indeed a unique device that the company has ever released, making it a marvel of engineering. Many users would be glad to compromise one speaker in favor of the new design, and it only brings us to question who Apple’s target audience really is. We will share additional details on the subject, so be sure to stick around for our in-depth coverage.
