Apple’s iPhone 18 Fold is rumored to feature a unique hybrid frame combining aluminum and titanium for strength and lightness

Apple’s first foldable iPhone might be its most ambitious hardware project yet, and a new report suggests that it could combine aluminum and titanium in its frame. According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 18 Fold will adopt a hybrid metal design to strike the perfect balance between weight, strength, and heat management.

Apple's first foldable iPhone aims to balance durability, weight, and innovation with a hybrid titanium and aluminum body

In the past, Apple has reserved titanium for its premium devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra. However, the iPhone 17 Pro returned to aluminum this year to improve heat dissipation. For the foldable iPhone, the company appears to be taking a hybrid approach, combining titanium’s structural rigidity with aluminum’s lightness to prevent durability issues without making the device heavy, according to Pu's investor notes seen by 9to5mac.

Reinforced hinge and late 2026 launch

Foldable hinges endure far more mechanical stress than a standard phone, and titanium can maintain alignment under repeated circumstances. Prominent industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also previously noted that Apple will use titanium and stainless steel for the hinge components, while keeping the rest of the chassis lighter. Kuo also stated that the device will ditch Face ID in favor of Touch ID as the primary form of biometric system.

The rumored 5.5-inch outer display and 7.8-inch internal display will make the iPhone 18 Fold a very capable device for productivity and general media consumption. It will also be a blend between a smaller form factor for everyday use, media consumption, and will be a productivity powerhouse, thanks to the larger inner display. Mark Gurman has previously stated that the device will resemble two iPhone Air models stacked side-by-side.

Pu also previously claimed that the iPhone Fold has already entered the New Product Introduction phase at Foxconn, and full-scale production is expected to begin in the second half of 2026. The production reports of the device are in line with prior rumors that place the launch of Apple’s first foldable in late 2026. We expect the device to be announced after the iPhone 18 launch in September of 2026.

Apple’s 2026 lineup looks strong

Aside from the foldable, Pu also notes that the demand for the iPhone 17 has been stronger than anticipated, which suggests that Apple will be entering 2026 with solid momentum. This could help support the iPhone 18 Fold’s debut later next year. The analyst also believes that the iPhone Fold will be a lead product for Apple’s 2026 lineup, offering innovation and a brand-new niche that goes beyond simple, plain slabs of glass.

If Apple pulls this off, the iPhone 18 Fold could mark a major turning point for the company’s hardware lineup. A durable yet lightweight frame, paired with exclusive software features might give Apple the edge it needs in the foldable race.
