Apple has been experimenting with the camera layout of the iPhone 16 models for a while, with various prototypes in the developmental phase. While the 'Pro' models are slated to feature a similar design to the current iPhone 15 Pro lineup, the standard models will undergo a major redesign. It was previously reported that the company will revert to the iPhone 12-like camera layout for the iPhone 16. It is now being reported that the iPhone 16 could feature a slimmer camera bump compared to current models.
Apple is testing a new iPhone 16 prototype with a slim camera bump that houses dual camera sensors in a vertical fashion
Since Apple is in its initial testing phase, the main focus for the company right now is to slim down the camera bump on the standard iPhone 16 models. It was previously reported that the company is working with three prototypes for the iPhone 16, each with a different design. The company is now testing another unit with a slimmer camera bump compared to the current iPhone 15 models.
The news was shared by MacRumors, suggesting that Apple's continuation of the vertical camera layout also includes a slim camera bump. The latest prototype from Apple features an iPhone X or iPhone 12-like camera layout housed in a plateau raised from the back glass. The device features two individual camera lenses - a wide angle and an ultrawide angle sensor. The camera bump will also feature a mic, but the flash is situated outside of the bump. The flash will sit flush with the back glass.
Schematics of the iPhone 16 surfaced online recently, which aimed to show a similar camera bump size. The smaller pill-shaped camera bump will give the device a comparatively sleeker look and feel. Apple is planning to upgrade the camera hardware on the iPhone and it remains to be seen how the company will achieve a slimmer profile for the bump. Potentially, the overall thickness of the device would increase, which would make more room inside the device to house the camera sensors. However, these are mere speculations as the iPhone 16 is still in its early developmental stage.
Additionally, it is yet to be seen if the company will go ahead with the same design. If the design does not bolster the upgraded cameras, we could see a thicker camera bump, potentially similar to the iPhone 15 models. Besides the slimmer camera bump, Apple is also testing a slightly tweaked Action Button on the iPhone 16 models. The company is testing a smaller Action Button compared to the one on the iPhone 15 Pro models.
We have recently covered that the company is also working on a new Capture Button for the iPhone 16. It was reported earlier that the iPhone 16's new Capture Button will work similarly to a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. It appears that the company is heavily invested once again in upgrading the camera of the iPhone. However, since the iPhone 16 is scheduled to launch later this year, the company could see fit to ditch the latest prototype and adopt a different solution altogether.
