Apple will officially launch the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the remaining models on September 20, but some lucky individuals have received the top-end flagship before, and judging by their curiosity, we got a first look at the cell powering the innards. As previous leaks suggested, the battery is covered by a steel enclosure, making it the first time the company has followed this approach. For those who do not know, it will significantly improve heat transfer.
iPhone 16 Pro Max battery shares the same design as the iPhone 16 Pro prototype’s cell that was leaked months before the official launch
On Majin Bu’s official website, two images have been uploaded, one of the iPhone 16 Pro Max and another showing the iPhone 16 Plus. However, the non-Pro model’s battery does not feature a metal casing, as shown below, suggesting that this addition might be exclusive to the more expensive models this year. This is strange to see because we reported an earlier leak about the base iPhone 16, whose battery was covered in multiple protection layers, indicating that this internal change would be available to all models.

The biggest advantage of adding a metal casing to the iPhone 16 Pro Max battery is better heat transfer. Apple might also have introduced this change to comply with EU regulations that demanded easier battery replacements. However, there are some drawbacks to adding this casing, with the first one being increased weight. Since steel is heavier than aluminum, it might not seem like a ton of mass has been added on paper, but the heft might be felt when carrying the iPhone 16 Pro Max as your daily driver.

The internal change visible in the iPhone 16 Pro Max pretty much confirms that the iPhone 16 Pro will also bear a metal battery case, as months before the launch, we reported about a prototype cell that was covered in the same material. Hopefully next year, Apple will standardize this feature for the entire iPhone 17 family.
