With Apple gearing up for its next big event on September 9th, users are anticipating the star of the show to be the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. As the event date approaches, many speculations are coming up on what to expect from it, particularly about the new smartphone series. There are many noteworthy changes that the Cupertino-based tech giant is bringing this time around. However, the one significant upgrade is the base storage capacity being moved up for the smaller Pro model.
Apple is moving up the base storage for its smaller Pro model for the first time to 256GB
Apple has generally kept the distinction between the Pro and the Pro Max models so that the two are distinctive and have varied offerings. Well, this year, Apple is pivoting in a different direction by letting go of the 128GB storage as the starting point for its lower-tier Pro model.
According to a new report by Trendforce, Apple would be going for 256GB base storage for both of the iPhone 16 Pro models and not keeping a gap between the models in this regard. The report came to this conclusion after speculations about the iPhone 16 Pro coming with the tetraprism periscope lens, which is on the higher end and generally reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro Max model.
Due to the minimum storage now going up to 256GB, Apple would most likely owe the high pricing to this change. Trendforce stated that even if the price remains unchanged, there seems to be a higher demand for larger storage due to consumer habits continuously evolving, raising the requirement for storage capacity, which would most likely continue this way.
If we look at how Apple has generally gone about the storage tiers, it was in 2020 that Apple went for the base storage of 128GB for the iPhone 12 Pro, as previously 64GB persisted in the iPhone X and onward. The entire iPhone 13 lineup came with a 128GB starting point. Keeping this pattern in view, it could be that the next models after the iPhone 16 series could potentially have 256GB as the base storage capacity.
We are also expecting the Pro models to come with the largest display sizes for the iPhone yet and pave the way for more internal space for components. The iPhone 16 Pro comes with a 6.27-inch screen, and the 16 Pro Max is packed with a 6.86-inch display. We are expecting the iPhone 16 series to be unveiled on Monday, and more details will surface then, so stay tuned.
