Online marketplaces are always a treasure trove for consumer electronics that can offer buyers excellent value, but it is also a breeding ground for scammers who can sell you defective items without your knowledge. Thankfully, a friend who accompanied the buyer immediately noticed that the iPhone 15 Pro’s original display had been swapped out with a 60Hz IPS LCD, prompting him to call out the seller, who had an interesting story to share.

It turns out that the person selling the iPhone 15 Pro was scammed by someone else

The unnamed person selling the iPhone 15 Pro said that the device was in amazing condition, according to the story told by @OutofGalaxyy on X. His friend contacted the seller on OLX, who demanded a price of 2,400 Polish złoty, or $662. Given that you can upgrade to a brand new iPhone 17 in the U.S. for $799, the iPhone 15 Pro might be slightly overpriced, but that is what you get when you live in Europe.

When the two individuals met with the buyer at night, @OutofGalaxyy immediately noticed that something was out of place. The iPhone 15 Pro display was an IPS LCD screen operating at 60Hz, which is the complete opposite of the retail units that ship with an LTPO OLED, as their refresh rate runs in the 1Hz to 120Hz range.

The friend who accompanied the buyer whipped out his iPhone 17 to show how the Dynamic Island should look on the iPhone 15 Pro, but the seller kept on denying for as long as he could. However, then came the biggest twist: the seller had actually been scammed when he purchased the device and was completely unaware that Apple’s previous-generation flagship was outfitted with a subpar display.

Thankfully, the transaction was not made, and the two people proceeded towards purchasing a brand new iPhone 15. Sure, it misses out on some of the iPhone 15 Pro’s flagship features, but you get a freshly packed box that is void of any scams or blemishes. Now imagine what the situation might have been if @OutofGalaxyy had not accompanied his friend or if they had not met in the middle of the day when it was difficult to make out the iPhone 15 Pro’s display? The outcome would have been entirely different.
