Apple is said to bring more exclusive upgrades to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but that does not mean it intends to switch every component in the upcoming flagship for more capable hardware. According to one rumor, the top-tier iPhone landing later this year is said to retain the same display and camera as its direct predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Tipster does mention that the SoC and RAM count to see a notable bump, with the A17 Bionic being one of the exclusive features
Starting with the camera, Revegnus has posted on Twitter that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will ship with the same primary sensor as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. An earlier rumor was doing the rounds, stating that the Sony Exmor IMX903 will be used for the 6.7-inch flagship, but it turns out that this upgrade will be reserved for the iPhone 16 Pro Max for 2024. Instead, for the 48MP main camera, Apple is rumored to stick with the IMX803.
Some might see this as a way to cut corners and bring down the components cost of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but adding a different camera is only half the story, as the rest of the image quality depends on the software. It is possible Apple improves the software while retaining the same hardware, which is not a flawed approach since it prevents the company from having to source brand new and pricey components every year that will only be used for a single generation of iPhones.

Next up, we have the display, with the tipster saying that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will ship with the same M12 panel as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. For those who do not know, ‘M12’ refers to the set of display materials used to make such panels, giving it unique properties. Referring to our earlier point, it makes little sense to do annual upgrades, especially when a little tweaking is all that is necessary to get better image results. To remind you, the iPhone 14 Pro Max was already rated as the best smartphone display by DisplayMate, beating the iPhone 13 Pro Max and nabbing 15 accolades.
Seeing as how the iPhone 14 Pro Max already sports a capable display, it would be pointless to upgrade. The exclusive upgrades arriving to the iPhone 15 Pro Max include the A17 Bionic SoC, which is reported on multiple occasions to be mass produced on TSMC’s 3nm process. Additionally, that 8GB LPDDR5 RAM upgrade will be a sizable increase over the 6GB RAM present in the iPhone 14 Pro Max, allowing users to open more apps in succession and keep those apps running in the background too.
Also, one of the biggest upgrades expected later this year is the periscope zoom lens, so a major portion of Apple’s focus will be invested there. Aside from that, a lot of those exclusive features could be added to the software, which we will update our readers in the coming weeks. While retaining the same camera and display is a bit disappointing for a flagship that might also be more expensive than its predecessor, there are other aspects that draw customers to Apple’s products.
