We already know that Apple is working on a range of smart home devices. Now, code snippets contained within a pre-release version of iOS 26 have revealed some details about a new device that the Cupertino giant is apparently working on, aptly called the HomePad.
HomePad: Apple's long-rumored smart home hub
Called the HomePad, the device is now being billed as a cross between an iPad and a HomePod, Apple's bespoke smart speaker.
The code snippets refer to the HomePad via its internal codename, J490. As far as its specs are concerned, Apple's smart home hub will be powered by the A18 chip, and includes a front-facing ultra-wide camera with Center Stage, an intelligent camera feature on iPads, Macs, and newer iPhones that leverages machine learning and an ultra-wide front camera to automatically pan and zoom, keeping the target people centered in the frame during video calls.
This suggests that users will be able to make FaceTime calls directly from the HomePad. What's more, the code snippets reveal that the front-facing ultra-wide camera will have a video resolution of 1080p. The device will also leverage Face ID tech for authentication and identification.
Do note that, as per the previous reporting by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is trying to unlock a whole new TAM related to smart home devices:
- Apple is eyeing the establishment of a manufacturing base in Vietnam in partnership with BYD.
- The tie-up reportedly relates to a range of smart home devices, including:
- A smart home hub with a 7-inch screen to control intelligent household devices and act as a command hub.
- Indoor security cameras.
- A tabletop AI robot that would be capable of mobility via a number of motors and sensors.
- The tabletop robot is currently slated for a 2027 launch.
