With WWDC less than two weeks away, Apple is pushing the AI advancements it plans to bring with iOS 18 even further. It is clear that the company's AI-centric enhancements will revolve around Siri, as numerous reports highlighting the upgrades for the virtual assistant have emerged. Although Apple has been inching along with Google and OpenAI on the artificial intelligence front, that will change with the company now picking up speed in adapting to the generative frenzy. A recent report gives us a glimpse of a new function for Siri that would allow the system to offer more extensive solutions.
The AI-powered Siri would be able to take on multiple commands and carry out complex tasks
According to a new update stated in Bloomberg's Mark Gurman report, Apple is now working to bring a major Siri update with the help of AI, which will manage features within apps by using your voice. The report highlights;
The new system will allow the assistant to control and navigate an iPhone or iPad with more precision. That includes being able to open individual documents, moving a note to another folder, sending or deleting an email, opening a particular publication in Apple News, emailing a web link, or even asking the device for a summary of an article…It will be limited to Apple’s own apps at the beginning, with the company planning to support hundreds of different commands.
With this new feature, more advanced commands could be followed that were not previously possible due to a cap on the functionality of the system. It can perform complex tasks through natural language commands and is now stepping into a new dimension with the help of Apple's large language models.
The virtual assistant could perform multiple prompts by evaluating the user's on-device activity. Siri's AI features would be automatically turned on, but the company could possibly offer a toggle to disable it. However, the advancement will be available to stock apps for now, with support for third-party apps possibly added in the future. Many of the requests would be handled on-device, but for more complex tasks, Apple might opt for cloud-based solutions.
The upgraded capabilities remind us of Samsung's Bixby, which came in 2017 and was ahead of its time in terms of the facility it was meant to provide. It was positioned differently from the other virtual assistants with its approach to assisting users by performing commands within apps using their voice.
The report gave an interesting update on the new AI-integrated Siri features, which will not launch with the release of the update but instead come out as an iOS 18.x update next year. Even if we do not get to use the smarter Siri now, we will get a preview of what the virtual assistant's advancements will be like at the WWDC event on June 10th.
