The upcoming 14th Gen Raptor Lake-S "Desktop" and Raptor Lake-HX "Laptop" CPU refreshes have been confirmed by Intel China.

Intel Sticks To 14th Gen Naming Convention For Upcoming Raptor Lake-S & Raptor Lake-HX CPU Refresh

In a bid to make users understand its new branding and naming convention, Intel China went on to explain the whole situation over at its Weibo handle. We know from recent leaks that Intel's Raptor Lake-S and Raptor Lake-HX refreshes were going to be part of the 14th Gen CPU family and on the mobile side, the Raptor Lake-U and Meteor Lake-P chips were going to be the first to reset things & utilize the brand new "Core" & "Core Ultra" branding. While the high-end desktop and laptop parts will retain the 14th-Gen branding, the Meteor Lake-P, and Raptor Lake-U CPUs will reset things and start with the 1st-Gen branding.

In the information presented by Intel China, this is the first time that the company officially reveals that the 14th Gen Raptor Lake-S "Desktop" and Raptor Lake-HX "Laptop" refresh CPUs are indeed real and will act as an upgrade over the existing chips.

Here is a general idea about how things will be going forward. Meteor Lake series will be the first to feature the "Core Ultra" branding. The Raptor Lake-U lineup will come with Core 3/5/7 branding without the "i". The anticipated Raptor Lake HX/S refresh will have the same old naming scheme. Intel has made things difficult for the average consumer when it comes to distinguishing different generations. So here's what Intel is doing:

  • Raptor Lake-S Refresh (Desktop) - 14th Gen "Core i" Branding
  • Raptor Lake-HX Refresh (Laptop) - 14th Gen "Core i" Branding
  • Meteor Lake-U/H (Laptop Client) - 1st Gen "Core Ultra" Branding
  • Raptor Lake-U/H Refresh (Laptop) - 1st Gen "Core" Branding'

One important thing to note is that the "Core Ultra" branding allows consumers to differentiate between Meteor Lake & Raptor-Lake U Refresh, which will be released under the same generation. As it suggests, the word "Ultra" gives a sense of high performance; hence, this will be utilized for the superior Meteor Lake series.

All client products, including Raptor Lake-S desktops and Raptor Lake/Meteor Lake mobile CPUs, will use the new naming convention beginning in 2H 2023, although the Meteor Lake CPU family will be the first to do so. Intel's Raptor Lake-S Refresh Desktop CPUs are expected to hit retail in October 2023.
