With the development of Mortal Kombat 1 winding down, there was no doubt that NetherRealm Studios was hard at work on a new game. In the past, many, including voice actors for Superman and Green Lantern, suggested that the studio's next game would be Injustice 3, and earlier this week, a WB Games Artist listed the game among those they have worked on. However, it seems like the next game from the Mortal Kombat series developer may be more of a DC fighters of sorts, rather than a continuation of the series.

Yesterday, known fighting games YouTuber Rooflemonger (who corroborated rumors of Tifa coming to Street Fighter 6) said in a new video that the game could be Injustice 3 in name only, and will be more of a DC fighter than a proper continuation. The game has reportedly been in the works for some time, even before Mortal Kombat 1 launched in September 2023, so the game should be in an advanced state of development.

Rooflemonger's information was later corroborated by MultiverSusie, a known MultiVersus leaker, who also suggested that Injustice 3 may move beyond the series branding altogether, which would make sense if the game is indeed more of a DC fighter, as rumors suggest.

While we have to take the new information about what Injustice 3 will and won't be with a grain of salt, considering where the story ended in the second entry in the series, it would make a lot of sense to wipe the slate clean and start over from scratch while retaining some of the series core features. NetherRealm Studios has also shown time and time again how it doesn't shy away from doing so in the Mortal Kombat series, as seen in 2011's Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 1, so there's a very good chance this will happen for the studio's other franchise as well.
