In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, the hunt for Metal Slimes remains the fastest way to grind experience points, but taking them down is no easy feat, as you can only hit them for 1 point of damage (when they don't dodge your attacks) and are as quick to run away from battle as ever before.
While there are skills such as the Warrior's Metal Slash, which can deal more damage to Metal Slimes, these are not enough to guarantee their defeat every time you encounter one in battle.
However, there is a secret in the AI logic of the Pirate Vocation (unlocked by Mastering the Thief and Sailor Vocations) that makes it easy to defeat every single Metal Slime you encounter before they run away.

The Pirate Vocation AKA The Metal Slime Slayer Bot

This Dragon Quest VII Reimagined secret is based on the Pirate Vocation Hatchet Man skill, unlocked at Vocation Level 2. According to the in-game description, this skill "doesn't connect so often, but when it does, it will cause a critical hit."
As the player, you have no idea when the skill will successfully connect to deal massive damage. However, the AI does! Most of the times, at least.
The AI Secret

In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, you can quickly enable Auto-Battling by pressing the Options/Start/+, which makes the characters act on their own, using the most effective offensive skills and healing when needed.
A side effect of this option is that any AI-controlled Pirate Vocation party member will use Hatchet Man if there's a high chance the hit connects. And against Metal Slimes, this happens very often!
During my testing at The Beacon, my Pirate Ruff successfully wiped out five groups of Liquid Metal Slimes using Hatchet Man without a single miss. However, there are a few crucial exceptions where the AI's "guarantee" logic seems to relax, prompting it to use Hatchet Man even when a hit isn't certain.
- If the only enemies left in the party were Liquid Metal Slimes, or
- If the character doesn't know any skill that enemies other than Metal Slimes are weak against.
In these cases, Hatchet Man did miss a few times. However, with more than one Liquid Slime in the enemy party, I was still able to defeat at least one of them, so the strategy remains highly effective with a high success rate.
In three successful encounters against Liquid Metal Slimes at The Beacon, my party jumped from level 33 to 37. Each group yielded approximately 30,000 EXP with the Experience Earned difficulty slider set to normal. As such, having characters with the Pirate Vocation is essential for grinding experience points effectively.
